Job Summary

Job Summary: Manufacturer (Bakery)

Murdoch's is looking to recruit a Bakery Manufacturer for the preparation, assembly and packaging of our award-winning meat pies, pastry and ready to eat products. This role may offer progression for someone who is keen to learn and develop further kitchen skills. Shifts are early starts from 6am.

Murdoch's makes and supplies award-winning pies, savoury pastries, cooked meats and coleslaw to convenience stores and supermarkets across Scotland, as well as for online UK distribution. Murdoch Butchers is certified by SALSA, operating to the highest food standards set out for small businesses. Full training will be delivered on the job by senior bakery/kitchen team.

This role may offer progression for someone who is keen to learn and develop themselves including technical skills, qualifications in meat manufacturing and management/leadership.

  • Shifts are typically from 6am until early/mid afternoon.

  • An orientation shift will be offered to all interviewees progressing to stage 2.

  • No previous knife skills or de-boning experience required

Job Description:

As part of the established bakery team you will assist with preparation, production, packaging and labelling of meat pies, pastry, ready meal, cooked meat and coleslaw products for dispatch/delivery.

 

This will include:

  • Handling, storage, transfer, preparation and of ingredients

  • Portioning of ingredients and pastry components for pies and cooked products

  • Assembly and handling of pastry and cooked meat products/ingredients

  • Following strict recipes, processes and instructions

  • Operation of machinery eg. automatic depositors, scales

  • Packaging and labelling

  • Maintaining hygiene and quality standards

  • Record keeping

  • Lifting and manual handling

  • Cleaning of food production equipment and utensils

  • Working in a high-pressure environment to order deadlines so our customers receive the freshest produce.

  • This production area can become cold as it's heavily ventilated

  • We are a small team handling a large volume of products. At busy times this role may include working in other departments within the business to get our full range out to our customers, including in our butchery where similar tasks may occur eg. preparation of products, packing, labelling.

Attributes

  • We are looking for someone who can work well within a small production team.

  • Manual handling, lifting and carrying is part of the job, so a basic level of physical fitness is required.

  • You will have good numeracy skills and be capable of following strict recipes, maintaining excellent quality standards and have good attention to detail. You will be motivated and enthusiastic, demonstrating good time-management and organisational skills

  • You will have basic computing skills for printing labels and record-keeping.

  • Must be able to handle beef, lamb, pork and poultry meats.

We are looking for people who are capable of diligently following procedures and instructions to maintain high quality and hygiene standards. (Full training will be given).
Food handling experience would be a benefit but not essential.

Good personal hygiene is essential.

Salary, Working Hours & Holidays

Starting rate of pay from NMW £12.21 per hour* (Based on age.)

Three month work trial/probationary period. (Additional hours may be available at busy times). Hourly rate, paid four weekly.  Four week work trial followed by three month probationary period. During the work trial you will be paid at basic rate (again, depending on experience) and given full induction training.

  • Statutory 28 days annual holiday (pro-rata based on hours accrued) includes Christmas Day/New Year's Day.

  • Full Time (from 30+ hours)

  • Part Time (from 16-20 hours)

  • Shifts from 6am.

  • Additional hours may be available at busy times, these may be in other departments.

  • Early starts from 6am (Mon - Friday, the odd weekend shift may be required depending on demand - on rota)

  • Rate of pay from NMW £12.21 per hour* (Based on age)

  • Rate will be formally reviewed/agreed after successful completion of all necessary training and probationary period.

  • Includes work trial and three month probation period.

  • Full training provided.
